Community outreach event on increasing citizens demand for better services and empowering them to report, document cases of corruption in Ebonyi State: Ebonyi LGA, Ikwo LGA, and Abakiliki LGA.

INTRODUCTION:
Alliances for
Africa (AfA) in collaboration with MacArthur Foundation had a three day community
outreach event in Ebonyi LGA, Ikwo LGA and Abakiliki LGAs respectively. This is
in line with
Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Foundation with support from the MacArthur Foundation on an
anti-corruption advocacy initiative to deepen and sustain transparency and
accountability in Nigeria. The outreach
event is intended to cover 12 LGAs, but had just kicked off with 3 LGAs in the
quarter 4 of 2018.
The community
outreach event participants had representatives from different groups
including, medical personnel, media, CSOs, albinos, disabled persons, political
party members, religious leaders, students, traditional rulers, security
agencies amongst others.
OBJECTIVES:
1.
To educate and empower
citizens at the grassroots level to demand
for better services, transparency and accountability from current and
aspiring political office holders.
2. To
create and support a community of practice on transparency and accountability
at the community and state level.
3. To
enlighten and empower citizens to monitor, document and report cases of
corruption in their community in Ebonyi state.
OUTCOME:
The community outreach event increased the knowledge of 304
persons in Ebonyi LGA. Ikwo and Abakiliki Local government areas (LGAs)
including the academia, medical personnel, traditional rulers, local government
staff, public servants, market women, religious leaders, media personnel,
albino, disabled, women leaders, students and political parties members in
demanding for better services from current political leaders in various offices
representing their constituencies and aspirants who are vying for political
positions in 2019 general election.
